What a WhatsApp contact click actually measures
A contact click occurs on the website before the visitor enters WhatsApp. Compare plugins by whether they detect the site’s actual links and widgets, rather than by a click count alone.
Where the click data goes
A WordPress log and a GA4 event are different destinations. Verify the stored page, referrer and UTM values, then separately verify that any analytics event reaches its destination.
The click happens on your site, not inside WhatsApp
WordPress plugins for developers should answer a client’s question: which pages prompt visitors to make contact? A click tracker can record an interaction with a WhatsApp link before the visitor leaves the site. It cannot tell you whether that visitor sent a message.
Start by identifying what the site already uses. A button plugin may count clicks on its own button, while a separate tracker may detect existing links or widgets. Neither approach is useful if it misses the client’s live contact controls.

What per-click data looks like in practice
A useful WordPress click record identifies the page where the click happened. Referrer and UTM parameters add context: they can help distinguish a visitor arriving from a campaign from one who found the page another way. Check which fields a candidate plugin actually retains rather than assuming every click counter stores them.
- In WordPress: check the recorded page, referrer and UTM values against a test visit.
- In analytics: check that an event was sent and received, not merely that a browser event exists.
The destination matters too. A WordPress log lets you inspect individual records; GA4 reports events it receives. An event made available in the browser does not become a GA4 event until something sends it there. WhatsApp Tracking vs Google Analytics: What’s the Difference? explains why those views answer different questions.

How to set it up in WordPress
Compare integrations on a test site with the client’s actual controls. Click a standard wa.me link and each live widget, then inspect the WordPress log. GA4’s enhanced measurement can collect outbound link clicks, but a JavaScript-driven widget may not behave like an ordinary link.
If the site uses Google Tag Manager, inspect the click and resulting tag in Preview mode. A “Just Links” trigger targets links; other controls need separate testing. Repeat the checks under the consent choices the site offers. How to Add Click Analytics to Any WhatsApp Button Plugin in WordPress covers the button-level steps if a control is missed.
Treat a recorded click, a browser event and a tag firing as three separate test results.
Free vs PRO: what each version tracks
Feature boundaries are specific to each plugin. WhatsLink Free provides a WordPress click log and a whatslink:click browser event. That event gives a developer something to work with, but it does not send conversions to ad platforms by itself.
WhatsLink PRO adds delivery to GA4, Google Ads and the Meta Pixel, plus CSV export and an email for each click. Other plugins may offer different free event integrations, so compare the current feature listings against the client’s required destinations and reporting workflow.
- Local record — inspect clicks in WordPress.
- Browser event — use it for custom tagging.
- Ready-made integrations — choose them when conversions must reach reporting platforms.
The one thing you still can’t track
An on-site click cannot verify what happens inside WhatsApp. It does not prove that a message was sent, a call was completed or a sale resulted. Report contact clicks as clicks, not conversations.
This distinction matters when configuring ad conversions: a contact-click event is a measurable signal, but its name and value should not imply a confirmed lead. PRO can send that signal to ad platforms and export or email its records; it does not connect directly to a CRM. Ready to use contact clicks in campaign reporting? - Click to Chat Analytics: Track Which Pages Drive WhatsApp Conversations
Click tracking is one part of a client-site toolkit. The first guide places this decision alongside other plugin choices developers make for client sites. The second focuses on interpreting page-level results when the question is which pages generate contact intent. Keep the underlying metric clear when presenting those results to a client. For a final plugin decision, test coverage on the live controls, inspect the stored fields, and confirm every required reporting destination.
What to compare in a click-tracking plugin
- Coverage of the client’s live links and widgets
- Page recorded for each click
- Referrer and UTM values retained
- WordPress log versus browser event
- Delivery to required analytics or ad platforms
- CSV export and per-click email (PRO)
