Build a WhatsApp Analytics Dashboard in Looker Studio

A WhatsApp analytics dashboard can show which website pages generate button clicks and how those clicks change over time. Its totals must come from a defined set of GA4 events, not every outbound click.

Choose the event before building the report

GA4 measures the action on your website, not activity inside WhatsApp. Check a live click in Realtime or DebugView, then use the same WhatsApp-specific event filter throughout the Looker Studio report.

The click happens on your site, not inside WhatsApp

A WhatsApp analytics dashboard can show which website pages generate button clicks and how those clicks change over time. Build it from a defined set of GA4 events: an unfiltered outbound-click total includes destinations other than WhatsApp.

GA4 records an action on your website. Its Event count measures recorded actions, so one visitor clicking twice can produce two events. The dashboard cannot treat that total as two people or two conversations.

If you need to distinguish the GA4 report from a WordPress click log before building either, read the tracking comparison. For now, choose one event source rather than combining counts from separate tracking methods. What the WhatsApp click report shows in practice

Start with a scorecard for click events, a time series for daily activity, and a table showing clicks by website page. Add a date-range control so the same report can answer “which pages worked this week?” and “did clicks change this month?”

  • Source page: Page path and screen class identifies the website page associated with the event. Use it as the table dimension to compare pages.
  • Destination: Link URL identifies where a detected outbound link leads. Check it when defining the WhatsApp filter; it is not the source page.

Label the scorecard “WhatsApp click events,” not “leads.” The label matters when colleagues reuse the report without checking its filter.

How to set it up in WordPress

Step 1 — Test a live button. Click a live WhatsApp button and look for its event in GA4 Realtime or DebugView. With enhanced measurement enabled, GA4 may record an eligible outbound link as click. A JavaScript-only widget may need a separately configured whatsapp_click event. The guide to tracking WhatsApp clicks without Google Tag Manager helps you assess the WordPress route.

Step 2 — Build and filter the report. In Looker Studio, connect the GA4 property and add a scorecard with Event count. Filter it to whatsapp_click or to outbound click events whose Link domain or Link URL matches your WhatsApp destinations. Apply the same filter to a Date time series and a Page path and screen class table. Do not add both event types together if they record the same button press.

Step 3 — Check the data. Test the event in GA4 before troubleshooting an empty report. Processed GA4 reporting can take 24–48 hours, even when the test click appears in Realtime. WhatsLink Free records each click’s page, UTM parameters and referrer in WordPress; that log does not automatically become a GA4 report. Track WhatsApp clicks free with WhatsLink: keep a WordPress click log with the page, UTM parameters and referrer for each click.

Free vs PRO: what each version tracks

WhatsLink Free provides the click log described above. The Looker Studio dashboard, by contrast, reads GA4 data and needs a working GA4 event; installing Free alone does not send its log to Looker Studio.

WhatsLink PRO adds WordPress reports with charts and filters, CSV export, per-click emails, and options to send clicks to GA4 as conversions using an existing tag, Google Ads and the Meta Pixel. Its built-in reports remain separate from the GA4-powered Looker Studio report.

  • WordPress reports — charts and filters for clicks
  • Conversion options — send clicks to GA4 using an existing tag, Google Ads and the Meta Pixel
  • CSV export — export clicks
  • Per-click emails — email each click

If you enable a dedicated GA4 event through PRO, filter the dashboard to that event instead of summing it with GA4’s outbound click event.

What your dashboard cannot track

A click does not show whether the visitor sent a WhatsApp message after opening it. Event count is not a count of unique leads: one person can click multiple times.

If other outbound links appear, add a WhatsApp-specific Link domain or Link URL condition. If the dashboard is empty, verify a real click in GA4 Realtime or DebugView and check that the filter matches its event; processed data may take 24–48 hours. For a closer look at individual website clicks, read the chat-link analysis guide. For broader click and chat metrics, see the WhatsApp analytics guide. For ads, verify the click event before using it as a conversion, and keep click totals separate from claims about conversations or sales. Send WhatsApp clicks to your ads and your team with WhatsLink PRO: explore PRO for conversion options, CSV export and per-click emails.

FAQ

Does a click mean someone sent a WhatsApp message?

No. The dashboard measures the website click, not whether the visitor sent a message after WhatsApp opened.

Is Event count the number of unique leads?

No. Event count includes repeated clicks, including multiple clicks by one person.

Why are other outbound links in my scorecard?

A scorecard filtered only to GA4’s click event can include other external destinations. Add a WhatsApp-specific Link domain or Link URL condition.

Why is my new dashboard empty?

Check a real click in GA4 Realtime or DebugView and verify the report filter matches its event. Processed data may not appear for 24–48 hours.
