Choosing a tool for a client-site symptom
A broken page, slow checkout and late scheduled task call for different evidence. Record the symptom and its timing before choosing a diagnostic tool.
Begin with the question, not the plugin
Query Monitor helps inspect query activity, Quick debug.log Viewer opens an existing error log, WP Crontrol shows scheduled tasks, and WP STAGING provides a place to test changes away from visitors.
Start with the client-site symptom
WordPress plugins for developers are most useful when each one answers a specific question. A broken page, a slow checkout and a missed scheduled task need different evidence; installing a full toolkit before identifying the symptom adds complexity without improving the diagnosis.
Start by recording what happened, when it began and whether it affects everyone. Then choose the tool closest to the problem rather than treating every warning as a reason to change code.
For errors, Query Monitor helps inspect activity attributed to plugins and themes, while Quick debug.log Viewer lets you read an existing WordPress error log in the dashboard. For late scheduled work, WP Crontrol shows scheduled tasks. WP STAGING creates a copy for testing changes away from visitors.
What the diagnostic output tells you
Different tools produce different evidence:
- Debug log: records errors and notices.
- Database query: a request WordPress makes for stored information.
- Query Monitor: can help identify an expensive query and its likely plugin or theme source.
- WhatsLink Free: records the page, UTM parameters and referrer for each WhatsApp click.
A log entry narrows your investigation, but neither it nor a query result proves what caused a visitor’s problem. WhatsLink’s details describe a click on the site, not the conversation that follows in WhatsApp. For help opening the log, see how to view WordPress debug.log without FTP.
Set up a safe testing workflow
Before changing the site: Take a restorable backup, or investigate on a staging copy. Staging is a place to test, not a substitute for a backup.
During investigation: Reproduce the symptom, inspect the relevant evidence, change one thing and test again.
Before installing a tool: Check its update and compatibility notices. A directory listing alone does not establish that it suits the current site. Use WordPress debugging settings for development or staging, not routine live-site use. If a log has grown unwieldy, preserve anything needed for investigation before clearing it; see the guide to cleaning debug.log safely.
Free versus paid developer tools
Choose a paid version only after naming the missing capability. Query Monitor, WP Crontrol and Plugin Check serve distinct investigations; Plugin Check reviews a plugin against development requirements and is not a general site-repair tool. Compare current features rather than assuming “PRO” means better debugging.
For WhatsApp tracking, free WhatsLink records click context. WhatsLink PRO adds:
- Ad conversions — send clicks to Google Ads, the Meta Pixel and GA4.
- CSV export — export click records.
- Click emails — email each click.
WhatsLink PRO does not connect directly to a CRM. If performance is the concern, use PageSpeed Insights alongside server-side diagnostics: its lab test and available real-user data answer different questions.
What a plugin still cannot establish
A slow query does not, by itself, explain a slow page for every visitor. A staging test cannot guarantee that a live update will behave identically. Likewise, a WhatsApp click cannot tell you whether the visitor sent a message or became a customer.
When evidence points in several directions, a paid WordPress consultation provides a diagnosis and written action plan, not fixes during the review. That is more useful than installing another diagnostic plugin without a question to answer.

What WhatsApp click tracking can record
- The page where a WhatsApp click happened
- UTM parameters for the click
- The click’s referrer
- Click conversions sent to Google Ads, the Meta Pixel and GA4 (PRO)
- CSV export of clicks (PRO)
- An email for each click (PRO)
FAQ
Should I install every tool in this toolkit?
No. Pick the tool that addresses the symptom and check its compatibility before installation.
Does Query Monitor fix slow database queries?
No. It helps expose query activity so you can investigate and test a change.
Is a staging copy enough protection before an update?
No. Keep a restorable backup as well as a separate place to test.
Can click tracking confirm a WhatsApp sale?
No. It records the click on your site, not the later conversation or sale.
