Track Link Clicks in WordPress Without Google Analytics

To track link clicks in WordPress, record the interaction on your site before the visitor reaches the destination. A page view cannot tell you whether someone clicked “Book now,” a navigation link, or an external resource.

Choose which links you need to count

First decide what you need to count: every ordinary link, only outbound links, or links to one destination. Those scopes require different tools. Google Analytics is optional; its automatic outbound-click measurement does not cover every internal link, and Search Console reports clicks from Google Search, not clicks within your pages.

The click happens on your WordPress site

A button that opens a URL is a link for tracking purposes. A WordPress click tracker can observe the click before the visitor leaves, whether the destination is another page on your site or a different website—provided the tool supports that type of link.

WhatsApp links are a narrower case. WhatsLink tracks WhatsApp, Telegram, and phone links; it is not a general-purpose tracker for every content link or menu item. For that specific use case, this guide to tracking WhatsApp clicks on WordPress explains where the click is recorded.

What per-click data looks like in practice

Check whether a plugin reports counts per link or individual click records. Linkyy’s free dashboard shows aggregated daily counts for HTML links, with filters including date, device, and visitor type. Those figures answer “Which link was clicked most?” but are not a timestamped history of individual visitors.

  • Per-link count: Helps compare a menu link with a button leading to the same destination.
  • Individual record: Helps inspect one click’s available details.

If you need records rather than totals, look for a tool that explicitly provides them. Insyta Click Tracker describes click records containing details such as the target URL, visible link text, and UTM parameters. Check the fields available in your chosen tool before assuming it captures the page containing the link or the visitor’s referrer.

An individual record still does not identify a person unless you have a separate, appropriate way to do that.

Install and activate a plugin whose stated coverage matches your links. For ordinary internal and external links, Linkyy is one option. Click a content link, a menu link, and a URL-based button, then check its dashboard for the corresponding counts.

Test while logged out or in a private window if your own clicks do not appear; some trackers exclude administrators.

If you instead need to record the page, UTM parameters, and referrer for each WhatsApp click, free WhatsLink serves that narrower purpose. It does not extend that record to ordinary links. Free vs PRO: what each version tracks

For ordinary-link tracking, Linkyy’s free version provides daily click counts per link and dashboard filters. Its Pro offering adds a visual overlay, badges, and exports. Do not treat those free counts as individual click records.

WhatsLink has a different scope: its free version records clicks on WhatsApp, Telegram, and phone links, including the page, UTMs, and referrer. WhatsLink PRO adds:

  • Conversion destinations — send supported clicks to Google Ads, the Meta Pixel, and GA4
  • CSV export — export supported clicks
  • Email notifications — notify your team of each click

Choose by link type before comparing prices: a PRO feature for WhatsApp clicks does not make the plugin a tracker for every ordinary WordPress link. WhatsLink does not connect directly to a CRM.

The one thing you still can’t track

A departure click does not prove that someone completed a booking, submitted a form, bought a product, or started a conversation. Those actions happen after the click and need measurement at their own destination.

That distinction matters when reporting results to a team or using clicks in ad campaigns. Treat the click as an observed step, not a completed outcome. WhatsApp Tracking vs Google Analytics: What’s the Difference? explains how those measurements differ. Running ads that lead to WhatsApp? WhatsLink PRO can send supported clicks to Google Ads, the Meta Pixel, and GA4 as conversions, export them as CSV, and email your team each click. If the link opens a phone dialer rather than a web page, the guide to tracking phone link clicks in WordPress covers tel: links specifically. They should not be assumed to behave like ordinary URLs in every tracker. For a WhatsApp button, the no-code button-click guide covers that setup. Check the destination of any button before selecting a plugin: its appearance tells you less about tracking compatibility than the link behind it. For each new link type, make one logged-out test click and confirm the expected record or count before relying on the dashboard.
