Conversion Tracking WordPress Plugin: Test Events Once
After activation, take the intended action once and confirm that one conversion fires. For a WhatsApp button, the observable action is the click on your WordPress site, not a message sent later inside WhatsApp.
Where to check the conversion
Check the on-site click record against your test visit, then inspect its destination in the relevant tag preview or analytics debugging tool. If the intended conversion fires twice, look for overlapping senders rather than hiding the problem with a reporting setting.
Where a conversion tracking WordPress plugin sees the action
A conversion tracking WordPress plugin needs one live check after activation: take the action once and confirm the intended conversion fires once. For a WhatsApp button, your site can measure the click that opens WhatsApp, not a message sent later.
That boundary determines what to test. If your conversion is a button click, inspect the click on your site; do not wait for evidence inside the chat. A recorded click is a useful lead signal, but it is not a confirmed conversation.
An event records an action. A tag is one way to send that record to an analytics or advertising platform.
What a test event looks like in practice
Write down one deliberate action, its page, its destination and the result. For example: one WhatsApp-button click from a contact page should produce one intended WhatsApp conversion, with that page attached to the click record.
- Test action: Click the button once from a page you can identify.
- Expected record: One click with the matching page and available visit details.
Free WhatsLink records the page, UTM parameters and referrer of each click. Check those fields against your test visit; UTM values and referrer depend on how the visitor arrived. This guide to adding click analytics to a WhatsApp button covers the button-side setup.

How to set it up in WordPress
Install and activate your plugin through Plugins → Add New, then configure the action you mean to measure. Open a fresh test session and perform that action once. Activation confirms the plugin is running, not that an event reached its destination.
For Google tags, inspect the action in Tag Assistant or Google Tag Manager preview mode; for GA4, check DebugView and the event parameters. Repeat from another relevant page. If the same intended conversion fires twice, inspect plugin settings, GTM, Google tags and older tags for overlapping senders.
GA4 may also collect an outbound click through enhanced measurement. Compare event names and conversion settings before calling two different click records a duplicate. A delayed standard report is not an immediate test result.
Free vs PRO: what each version tracks
Free WhatsLink provides the on-site click record, including its page, UTM parameters and referrer. Use that record to verify what happened on WordPress before adding an advertising conversion to the same action.
WhatsLink PRO sends WhatsApp clicks as conversions to Google Ads, the Meta Pixel and GA4. It also exports clicks as CSV and emails every click; it does not connect directly to a CRM. This guide to WhatsApp conversions in Google Ads and Meta Ads explains the platform-specific setup.
A Google Ads “count one” setting does not stop a tag firing twice. Find and remove an overlapping sender rather than using a reporting setting to conceal it.
What you still can’t track
Neither tier can tell whether someone actually sent a WhatsApp message after opening the chat. Name the conversion “WhatsApp click” so reports do not imply a reply or sale that the website cannot observe.
This distinction matters when assessing ads: a rising click count shows more people opened the link, not that more conversations took place. Compare it with messages your team receives rather than treating the two totals as interchangeable.

What to check in a one-click test
- One deliberate button click from an identifiable page
- One matching on-site click record
- The page, available UTM parameters and referrer
- One intended conversion in tag preview or DebugView
- A check for overlapping senders if it fires twice
- CSV export and per-click emails with PRO
FAQ
Does an empty GA4 report mean the plugin failed?
No. Check DebugView for the immediate test; standard reports can take longer to update.
Are two click events always a duplicate conversion?
No. An automatic GA4 outbound click and a separately configured event can coexist. Check which events you marked as conversions.
Can “count one” fix two firing tags?
No. It changes Google Ads counting per ad click, not how many times tags fire.
Does a WhatsApp click prove a message was sent?
No. It shows that the visitor clicked the link on your site, not what happened inside WhatsApp.
